Moving data

There are several ways to keep your data when reinstalling the OS or import it to Yandex Browser on another computer.

  1. Via Yandex Browser synchronization
  2. Via your personal profile
  3. Via a file (bookmarks and passwords)

Via Yandex Browser synchronization

Attention. If you use multiple profiles in Yandex Browser, make sure you are using the correct profile before syncing. Otherwise, you might accidentally share your data (including passwords) with the owner of the profile that is active during syncing.

Syncing provides access to data from all your devices and data recovery when reinstalling the OS. During syncing, data is sent to the Yandex server via a secure channel. Passwords are stored in an encrypted form. The data on the server is protected by the authorization system.

You can sync the following data:

  1. Select the data you want to sync:

    1. Click   → Settings → Sync settings.
    2. Turn on options to sync the data you need.
  2. Wait until your data is copied to the server. The upload may take up to 20 minutes, depending on the internet speed and the amount of data.
  3. After uploading the data to the server, disable syncingto avoid possible failures when reinstalling the system.
  4. Reinstall the OS and install Yandex Browser.
  5. Enable syncing and make sure you are using the same Yandex ID. Your data will be added to Yandex Browser.
Note. However, you will have to restore Tableau manually. Tabs will not be restored as they were either, but you can access them on the Other devices tab.

Via your personal profile

Attention. You can't move passwords, extensions, and settings using this method. We recommend moving data using syncing.

Your personal set of settings and data is stored locally on your computer in your personal profile. The profile is created automatically when Yandex Browser is installed. You can copy your profile to a new device or a reinstalled OS.

Data stored in your profile includes the following:

Note. We recommend moving passwords in a file because this is more secure. If you want to import passwords via your profile, be sure to create a master password, otherwise Yandex Browser will not be able to decrypt your passwords after you import them.

Yandex Browser profiles are stored in the User Data folder. We recommend importing them all at once and then deleting the ones you don't need in the settings:

  1. Close Yandex Browser by clicking   → Advanced → Close the browser or pressing Ctrl + Shift + Q.
  2. In Explorer, open the С:\Users\Your account name\AppData\Local\Yandex\YandexBrowser\User Data folder and copy it to an external drive, such as a USB flash drive. The AppData folder is hidden. To see it, enable hidden folder display.
  3. Install Yandex Browser on your new device or in your reinstalled OS.
  4. In Explorer, open the С:\Users\Your account name\AppData\Local\Yandex\YandexBrowser and paste into it the User Data folder from the USB flash drive.
  5. Launch Yandex Browser. Select the profile you need (if you moved more than one profile).
  6. Make sure the data and settings have been added to Yandex Browser. Delete the profiles you don't need.

Via a file (bookmarks and passwords)

If you need to save only passwords or bookmarks, move them using a file.

  1. Passwords
  2. Bookmarks

Passwords

  1. Export passwords:
    To a password-protected archive
Note. The archive is downloaded in ZIP format.
    1. Click   → Passwords and cards.
    2. Go to Passwords.
    3. If you have already created a master password, enter it to access your vault.
    4. In the upper-right corner, click  → Export passwords .

    8. If you use your account password on that computer, enter it in the system password dialog window.
Note. The system password isn't requested if you created a master password. Also note that Linux doesn't have a system password.
    9. Name the archive and save it in a convenient place.
    To a CSV file
Note. In a file, passwords are stored unencrypted, otherwise they cannot be imported to Yandex Browser.
    1. Click   → Passwords and cards.
    2. Go to Passwords.
    3. If you have already created a master password, enter it to access your vault.
    4. In the upper-right corner, click  → Export passwords .
    5. Select To a text file and click Export.
Note. The system password isn't requested if you created a master password. Also note that Linux doesn't have a system password.
    6. If you use your account password on that computer, enter it in the system password dialog window.
    7. Name the file and save it in any convenient place.
  2. Install Yandex Browser on your new device or in your reinstalled OS.
  3. Import passwords to Yandex Browser:
    1. Click   → Passwords and cards.
    2. Go to Passwords.
    3. If you have already created a master password, enter it to access your vault.
    4. In the upper-right corner, click  → Import passwords.
    5. In the Select import source section, select the program from which you want to import passwords.
      • Yandex Browser (*.zip): You'll have to enter the password that you set when exporting passwords.
      • Yandex Browser (*.csv)
    6. Enter the password file and click Open.

The browser will start importing passwords. When all passwords are imported, Yandex Browser will show you how many passwords have been added.

Once imported, passwords are encrypted with a key generated by Yandex Browser. For better security, we recommend creating a master password and a backup encryption key.
