# 4.1.7. Natural features (vegetation, hydrography, terrain)

Below is a short list of established practices in Russian publishing and cartography for formatting names of natural features (vegetation, hydrography, and terrain items). You'll also find examples of how to write place names (proper names of geographical features) correctly.

Rules for entering Official and Caption names differ in many cases:

- [4.1.7.1. The official name](#4.1.7.1)
- [4.1.7.2. The name for the map caption](#4.1.7.2)
- [4.1.7.3. Abbreviations in names for captions on the map](#4.1.7.3)

There are common rules that apply to both name types:

- [4.1.7.4. Word order in the names of all types](#4.1.7.4)
- [4.1.7.5. Inflected forms in the names of all types](#4.1.7.5)

## 4.1.7.1. Official name {#4.1.7.1}

**4.1.7.1.1** {#4.1.7.1.1}

: The Official name should indicate the item type and its proper name.

    **4.1.7.1.1.1. Item type** {#4.1.7.1.1.1}

    : Geographic terms for the item types (for example, _озеро, остров, канал_) are **always** included in full in the Official names if the item in question **has a proper name** (for example, _озеро Байкал_, _Гора Эльбрус_, _and so on_).

        If an item **doesn't have a proper name**, its type should be included in the Official name only if it's a **unique type that's not in the lists** for creating items in Yandex Map Editor. If you're mapping a natural feature without a proper name and choose its type from the list, do not specify the Official name.

    : Please note that the item type:

        - Must always begin with a lowercase letter for polygonal and linear items.

            For example: _озеро Эльтон, Баренцево море_.

        - For natural features:

            - If the name begins with the item type, it must begin with a capital letter.

                For example: _Гора Эльбрус, Фонтан Дружба народов_.

            - If the item type isn't in the beginning, use a lowercase letter for it.

                For example: _Улаганский перевал_, _Большой каньон_.

        - Natural features without a proper name must start with a capital letter.

            For example: _Разлом_, _Каньон_, _Карьер_.

        _Examples:_

    **4.1.7.1.1.2. Proper name** {#4.1.7.1.1.2}

    : In proper names of polygonal, linear, and point natural items, start the first word with a capital letter. Start all the other words with a lowercase letter (except proper names).

        For example: _канал Грибоедова, сквер Девичьего поля, Битцевский лес, Приморский парк культуры и отдыха, парк Красные казармы, парк 70-летия системы профтехобразования, детский парк имени Н.Н. Прямикова, Центральный парк культуры и отдыха, национальный парк Лосиный остров, дендрарий_.

**4.1.7.1.2** {#4.1.7.1.2}

: Don't use abbreviations in Official names.

    Exceptions are allowed if they are included in official documents regarding the naming or renaming of that map item. For example: _im. V.I Lenin's_.

**4.1.7.1.3**

: If a quarry doesn't have an official name but is locally referred to using the name of the closest locality or the type of work it was used for, then you can use that name as the official one.

## 4.1.7.2. Map caption name {#4.1.7.2}

Set the caption only for the item types listed here and in the format specified below.

**4.1.7.2.1. Abbreviated type and proper name** {#4.1.7.2.1}

: Only used for captioning the following item types: урочище, мыс, and полуостров.

**4.1.7.2.2. Proper name without a type** {#4.1.7.2.2}

: Used for point objects in the hydrography and terrain categories, on condition that the name is in the nominative case.

    For example, the official name is _Гора Эльбрус_ and the caption on the map is _Эльбрус_.

**4.1.7.2.3. Item type and proper name** {#4.1.7.2.3}

: If the official name of a point terrain feature is a combination of [type]+[proper name]+[height], with the proper name in the genitive case, then the caption on the map should be a combination of [type]+[proper name].

    For example, the official name is _Гора Чековского 418 метров_, and the caption is _Гора Чековского_.

    If the official name of a point terrain feature is a combination of [type]+[proper name], with the proper name in the genitive case, don't specify any caption.

    For example, the official name is _Гора Белова_, and the caption is _not specified_.

**4.1.7.2.4. Item type and an abbreviated proper name** {#4.1.7.2.4}

: If the caption name uses a shortened form of the proper name (see [4.1.7.3. Abbreviations in names for captions on the map](#4.1.7.3)), the name should include the item type to sound better.

    For example, the official name is _Пик имени Исмоила Сомони_ and the caption name is _Пик им. Исмоила Сомони_.

**4.1.7.2.5. Abbreviated type** {#4.1.7.2.5}

: If the name of a park or square consists of a proper name and words that describe its type in more details, the describing words are omitted.

## 4.1.7.3. Abbreviations in captions {#4.1.7.3}

**4.1.7.3.1** {#4.1.7.3.1}

: You can abbreviate the words большой (_б._), малый (_м._), новый (_нов._), старый (_ст._), верхний (_в._), нижний _(ниж._), средний (_ср._), восточный (_вост._), западный (_зап._), северный _(сев._), южный (_юж._) if they're used in their literal meaning and are not part of the actual name.

    If such words aren't used in their literal meaning or are part of the proper name, they aren't abbreviated. For example: _Нижний Новгород, Большая Уссурка, Большая Нева, Зелёный Мыс_ (the last one is a place name in Senegal, not to be confused with _м. Зелёный_ in Crimea).

**4.1.7.3.2** {#4.1.7.3.2}

: If a geographical name includes a first, middle, and last name, the first and middle ones are replaced with initials. Write the initials before the last name.

    For example: _im. V.I Ленина, им. М.И. Калинина_.

    If a geographical name includes a first and a last name, they're written in full (don't replace them with initials).

    For example: _острова Сергея Кирова, им. Степана Разина, им. Коста Хетагурова_.

    Exceptions are allowed if the initials are included in official documents regarding the naming or renaming of that map item.

    For example: _im. E. Pugacheva_.

## 4.1.7.4. Word order {#4.1.7.4}

**4.1.7.4.1** {#4.1.7.4.1}

: Put the geographic term (that determines the item category) **after the proper name** if the proper name consists of:

    - A noun in the nominative or genitive case (for example, _Гора Благодать, море Лаптевых, озеро Селигер, полуостров Камчатка, пруд Садки_).
    - An adjective and a noun (for example, _остров Новая Сибирь, острова Комсомольской правды, пролив Карские ворота_).
    - A non-ordinal number and a noun (for example, _Гора Пять братьев, хребет Петра Первого_).

**4.1.7.4.2** {#4.1.7.4.2}

: If the name consists of a geographic term (item type) and an adjective, the position of the term is determined as follows:

    **4.1.7.4.2.1. Before the adjective** {#4.1.7.4.2.1}

: Names that merge words in Russian and other languages or names that merge the root or stem of the word with a geographic term (**болото, гора, озеро, остров, река, ручей**) are written as one word, with the geographic term repeated before the name.

## 4.1.7.5. Case forms {#4.1.7.5}

If the proper name of a map item includes a first name, a last name, an organization name, a ship names, or a different name, the general rule is to use the genitive case.

For example: _м. Дежнёва, пролив Екатерины, м. Елизаветы, острова Де-Лонга, острова Сергея Кирова, пролив Шокальского, берег Харитона Лаптева, остров Демьяна Бедного, острова Комсомольской Правды, остров Генриетты_.

Exceptions are possible for some well-established names, where the nominative case is used. For example: _пролив Рюрик, м. Челюскин, остров Чкалов_.
