# What are goals? Types of goals

You can create goals for each Yandex Metrica tag when setting its parameters. Goals can help you with:

- Tracking user actions (such as pageviews and button clicks).
- Set up retargeting in [Yandex Direct](https://yandex.com/support/direct/impression-criteria/retargeting-lists.html) and [Yandex Audiences](https://yandex.com/support/audience/segments/segment-new.html).

A _goal_ is an action that the site owner wants a user to complete: viewing a particular number of pages, going to a specific page, clicking a button, clicking a link, making a purchase, and so on.

When users visit your site and interact with it, Yandex Metrica [collects information about this](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/how-it-works.md#how-it-works) and registers goal completions (conversions). This data is used to calculate so-called conversion metrics.

A _conversion_ is the point at which the user completes the condition that is set in the goal parameters.

A _converted user_ is the user who completed the condition that is set in the goal parameters.

A _converted session_ is a [session](*визит) in which a conversion occurred. A single converted session may include multiple completions of the same goal.

The _conversion rate_ is the percentage of conversions out of the total number of sessions.

The _user conversion rate_ is the share of converted sessions among the total number of unique users.

The _conversions per user_ is the average number of conversions per unique converted user.

The _revenue by goal_ is a parameter passed with some goals that shows the revenue for a goal or its value. It can be specified when creating a goal in the interface as static revenue or passed as a parameter with the `price` or `order_price` attribute.

Example:

You have a site with educational courses. The site allows users to fill out an application to participate. In this case, submitting the form could be considered the conversion. A site user who submitted the form is a converted user. And the session during which the user submitted the form is a converted session.

You can track conversion metrics in [most of the Yandex Metrica reports](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/reports/goals.md#goals). The [report on conversions](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/reports/conversion.md#conversion) is also available.

Goals are divided into several types depending on their conversion criteria:

- [Conversion](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/goal-js-event.md#create-goal). Information about a completed goal is transmitted using JavaScript, API integration, or manual file upload.
- [Page depth](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/goal-page-views.md#goal-page-views). Viewing a particular number of pages on the site.
- [Page view](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/goal-page-visit.md#goal-page-visit). Viewing the specified pages on the site.
- [Click on email](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/email.md). Tracking clicks on all addresses on the site or the specified address.
- [Click on phone number](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/tel.md). Tracking clicks on all phone numbers on the site or the specified phone number.
- [Button click](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/click.md) Track clicks on buttons and other clickable elements.
- [Form submission](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/form.md). Track the submission of all forms on the site, or only some of them.
- [Open messenger](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/messengers.md). Track site users’ clicks on links to popular instant messengers.
- [Clicks to social networks](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/social-networks.md). Track site users’ clicks on links to popular social networks.
- [File download](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/download.md). Track downloads of all files on the site, or just some of them.
- [Site search](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/search.md) Find out how often visitors use search on your site.
- [Transitions back from the payment system](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/simple-goal/payment-system.md). Track how many users returned to the site after clicking through to a payment system.
- [Calls](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/call-goal.md). Track different categories of calls: all, only unique, and any or unique with a duration of more than 30 seconds.
- [Chats](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/chat-goal.md). Track chat events: which messaging app the conversation happened in, and whether the customer's message was answered.
- [Multi-goal](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/multi.md). Use it to combine several of the conditions of achieving a result listed above, under one goal.
- [Multi-step goal](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/goal-steps.md#goal-steps). Combines some of the goal types listed above, which must be completed one after another in a predefined sequence of steps.

Yandex Metrica [can automatically create](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/auto-goals.md#activate) various goals.

## Using goals in a Yandex Direct campaign {#direct}

If someone other than you is managing your campaigns in Yandex Direct, for example, an agency or a setup specialist, you can give them permission to work with existing [automatic](https://www.yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/auto-goals.md) and manually created goals in Yandex Metrica. This Yandex Direct user can then use goals to optimize campaigns without access to the Yandex Metrica tag.

In this case, the Yandex Direct user will only have access to the statistics needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the campaigns they created.

{% note alert "Restriction" %}

It is not possible to give permission to use goals to set up retargeting and audience selection.

{% endnote %}

To give permission to use goals, go to the **Goals** page in Yandex Metrica and enable the **Allow optimizing campaigns for goals without access to the tag** option. If you recently created a tag, the option is enabled by default.

## Favorite goals {#favorite}

**Favorite goals** is a feature that allows you to highlight and track your website’s key goals. You can select goals important to your business by marking them as favorite, after which statistics for these goals will be automatically displayed in Yandex Metrica reports. This simplifies traffic effectiveness analysis and saves time by avoiding the need to manually analyze each goal.
