Import emails from a Gmail account

There are two ways to read emails from Gmail in Yandex Mail:

  • Create an app password and enable an email importer.
  • Set up email forwarding.

Follow the steps described below in the full web version of Gmail and Yandex Mail (not in the mobile version or mobile app).

  1. Open the Google Account page. Log in to your Google account if you're prompted to.

  2. Under How you sign in to Google, find the 2-Step Verification row. If it's off, turn it on. To do this, click anywhere in the row and follow prompts from Google.

  3. After you've made sure that two-factor authentication is turned on, go to the App passwords page.

  4. Enter a name that will help you remember where the app password should be used (for example, "For email import").

  5. Click Create. You’ll see a 16-digit password appear in the new window. Copy the password or save it somewhere safe.

    Alert

Google displays passwords with spaces after every four characters. Delete those spaces before you use your password. For example, instead of vvrp ylwk gkhh jymz, use vvrpylwkgkhhjymz for authentication.

  6. Click Done.

  7. Log in to the Yandex email account where you want to import messages from Gmail. How do I log in?

    • If you already had an active email importer for Gmail but it stopped working:

      1. In the top right corner, click All settings. Select Email importer. (Here's a direct link to that section)

      2. Under Connected mailboxes, hover over the email importer for Gmail and click .

      3. Enter your 16-digit password without spaces in the App password field and click Save.

    • If you want to add a new email importer:

      1. In the top right corner, click All settings. Select Email importer. (Here's a direct link to that section)

      2. Choose Gmail.

      3. Enter your Gmail address and the 16-digit password you saved earlier (without spaces):

      4. Click Enable. If the connection with the other mailbox is successfully established, you will see the corresponding message.

Email is first imported a few minutes after setting up the importer. The importer accesses the other mail server from several times per hour to once every few days. You cannot manually set or change the import time. It depends on the protocol used (POP3 or IMAP) as well as the operating features of the server that email is imported from. This is why emails may come with a delay.

Alert

If you're using a work or school Google account and have trouble setting it up, contact your administrator.

Even if you set up forwarding, emails from Spam won't be forwarded.

  1. Open Gmail on your computer. Log in to the account that you want to forward emails from. You can enable forwarding only in a personal Gmail account. This feature isn't available for groups and aliases.
  2. In the top right corner, click  and then See all settings.
  3. Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In Forwarding, click Add a forwarding address.
  5. Enter the Yandex address that you want to forward emails to. Click Next → Proceed → ОК. An email will be sent to the specified address to verify your permission. Open the email and follow the link.
  6. Go back to Gmail and refresh the page.
  7. Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  8. In Forwarding, select Forward a copy of incoming mail to.
  9. Choose what to do with the email copies in the mailbox they're forwarded from. We recommend choosing Keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox.
  10. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page.
